Herbs as wilderness food

Nature is also home to many plants and herbs that you can use when cooking wilderness food. With a little knowledge about these green treasures, you will discover that the forest floor becomes a rich and green pantry.

Some of the most common herbs and plants you will find in nature during the autumn months are ramsons (also called wild garlic) and nettles. Ramsons are flavorful herbs that you can use to season your fish.
You can also mix the herb with butter and use it for baked potatoes.

Ramsons

The herb has round, elongated, green leaves and small white flowers that almost look like stars. The leaves have stems, and the herb grows 20-40 cm tall. Ramsons can easily be confused with, for example, lily of the valley, which is poisonous. Therefore, be sure that the herb you have found smells like garlic!

Nettles

The well-known herb has probably stung most of the country's population, so it’s no wonder that most avoid it. At the same time, nettle is actually a very nutrient-rich herb that you can make soup from. Nettles taste great with fish, and there are several recipes for fish soup with nettle. You can also choose to make a pure nettle soup and eat it as a side dish with fried fish or other wilderness food. Either way, nettle is a flavorful wilderness food experience.

Preparation of nettle soup

Nettle soup is a very simple and easy soup to make and is therefore also perfect for wilderness cooking. Nettles are rich in vitamins and minerals such as iron and calcium, while the herb also has a high protein content.

1. Pick the nettles, rinse them well, and strip the leaves from the stems
2. Cut one onion and optionally a clove of garlic.
3. Fry onions, garlic, and nettle leaves in butter in a pot until golden
4. Pour about 1 liter of water and broth (or bouillon) into the pot and let it boil for 10 minutes

The list of wild plants and herbs that can be used in wilderness cooking is endlessly long. Have you, for example, tried tea with wild mint? There are plenty of wilderness food ideas to explore! The important thing is to remember to read carefully about the ingredients you are looking for.

Fortunately, you can always bring along some potato salad and grilled sausages in case the fishing rod fails and the crab hunt doesn't work out!
