The History of Fällkniven
Fällkniven is a Swedish knife manufacturer, founded in 1984 by Peter Hjortberger in Boden, Norrbotten. Originally, the company started as an importer of knives, but in 1987 they began designing their own knives. Over the years, Fällkniven has earned a strong reputation for producing high-quality knives, especially for outdoor and survival use. Their most famous model, the F1, was developed as the official survival knife for the Swedish Air Force and has been in use since 1995.
Fällkniven is known for their use of laminated steel, often VG10 or Super Gold Powder Steel, which gives the knives extra durability and sharpness while also being rust-resistant. This steel is unusual for survival knives, which typically use high-carbon steel, but Fällkniven uses a convex edge that ensures strength and performance under demanding conditions. The production of Fällkniven’s fixed blade knives is carried out in Seki City, Japan, by the well-known Hattori factory, while their folding knives are made by Moki.
Over the years, Fällkniven has gained great respect among both professionals and outdoor enthusiasts, and their knives are known to be among the strongest mass-produced stainless steel knives in the world. The company has also been recognized as a royal warrant holder to the King of Sweden since 1999.
Simple High-Quality Sharpening Equipment
Fällkniven offers a range of sharpening products known for their quality and versatility, especially for outdoor and survival use. Two of their most popular products are the DC3 and DC4, which are small, compact double-sided sharpening stones. Both stones have a diamond-coated side for quickly removing metal from a very dull edge and a ceramic side that fine-tunes and polishes the knife’s edge. These sharpening stones are especially practical in the field, as they do not require water or oil, making them easy to use on the go.
The DC3 measures 3 inches in length and is suitable for smaller knives or tools, while the DC4 is slightly larger at 4 inches long and better suited for larger knives and axes. Both come with a leather pouch, which can also be used as a strop to further refine the knife’s edge.
These sharpening stones are known for their durability, and users especially appreciate the ceramic side’s ability to maintain a sharp edge without frequent sharpening. The larger size of the DC4 makes it easier to use as a traditional sharpening stone with long strokes, which many prefer for bigger knives.
