Cast iron is a quite unique material with many advantages and very few disadvantages, making it an ideal material for producing pots and pans. Often, cast iron products end up becoming the cook’s favorite! At the same time, cast iron is a very durable material that often lasts your entire lifetime—if you take good care of it.
In fact, cast iron pans and pots are an ancient invention dating back to 300 BC. It is rare for an invention to last more than 2,000 years without being modernized and further developed, which signals how well thought out and ideal cast iron products already are.
Advantages of cast iron pans and pots
One of the most unique advantages of cast iron pots and pans is that they can withstand very high temperatures, making the products ideal for cooking over an open fire. This explains why so many outdoor products are made of cast iron. Additionally, cast iron provides excellent heat distribution in the pot or pan, as the heat is evenly and efficiently spread throughout the tool while also being retained for an incredibly long time. Sometimes it is even possible to cook food solely with the residual heat in the pan or pot, as cast iron retains heat to such a degree.
Cast iron pans and pots also have a natural non-stick coating that makes it difficult for food to burn. The surface of cast iron pans and pots has tiny microscopic holes, and when you cook your dishes, the oil from the food binds to these. From there, a smooth and natural non-stick surface is created on the cast iron pan or pot.
This non-stick surface can disappear over time, but don’t worry! You can easily restore the coating yourself by simply rubbing the cast iron pan or pot with oil after a light wash, once the product has been allowed to dry completely. Then place the cast iron pan or pot in the oven for about an hour at 230 degrees Celsius. After the product has cooled, you can advantageously repeat the process 3-5 times—depending on what you think your cast iron pan or pot needs!
Pots and pans made of cast iron are often heavier than other materials such as stainless steel. However, cast iron pans and pots are still worth investing in because of the magical food you will definitely be able to prepare with these tools, whether you are considering investing in a grill pan or a Dutch Oven!
A cast iron pan or pot is a fantastic investment if you want to acquire a new outdoor tool that can be your companion for life.
