Kelly Kettle Base Camp “Large” 1.6 liters

This is the largest of all the kettles from Kelly Kettle. It’s great if you need a lot of water and want it quickly. With its volume of 1.6 liters, you can quickly boil plenty of water. If you are part of a group where freeze-dried food, coffee, or tea is popular, then the Base Camp Large is the right size for you.

The Scout model is by far the most versatile kettle from Kelly Kettle. Larger than the Trekker model and smaller than the big Base Camp. 1.2 liters is enough for you and one more.

All Kelly Kettles are imported in “SST” versions

SST stands for Stainless Steel. Aluminum can only withstand a limited amount of heat, and without water in the kettle, you can melt it if it’s aluminum. SST versions MUST ALSO be filled with water when in use, but they are still somewhat more durable.

Hobo Stove is worth mentioning

Kelly Kettle Hobo Stove is one of the newer gadgets for Kelly Kettle. Previously, you could only cook on your kettle if you had mounted a “pot support.” That can sometimes be impractical because if you want to cook with your Kelly Kettle and don’t have any more water, you’re not supposed to use it. The Hobo Stove solves that problem because when mounted on the base, you can cook again without having to think about water. Furthermore, cooking becomes more stable since the surface of your Kelly Kettle base is generally larger than the top of a pot support.

Kelly Kettle - History

Kelly Kettle has a long history dating back to the 1890s.
You might wonder if that’s true? But it certainly is.
On a small farm of a farmer and fisherman by the coast of Lough Conn in Ireland, Patrick Kelly developed the first kettle made of tin and found that it worked very well. The problem with this tin kettle was that it burned out relatively quickly, so after several attempts with tin kettles, he decided to make his kettle from copper, which proved to be much more durable.

The news of this new wonder quickly spread to local anglers, who rightly took a liking to Patrick Kelly’s kettle, the one we now know as Kelly Kettle.
The story of Kelly Kettle certainly doesn’t end here; it’s almost just beginning.
We move to the 1950s. Patrick Kelly’s son Jim became a locally famous angler and boatman.
He was known for always carrying his father’s invention, the Kelly Kettle, and was not shy about showing how quickly he could boil water in the kettle even on the wettest and windiest days.
At this time, Kelly Kettle production was still only a hobby during the winter months and was made only to order.

But in the 1970s-1980s, something happened. Due to better and cheaper transportation options, more and more anglers visited the Irish coasts and became acquainted with Patrick’s Kelly Kettle, easily seeing the advantages of the kettle.
With the increasing demand, it became clear that production had to change. Padraic Kelly, the current director’s father, slowly implemented new and more modern production techniques, and a new aluminum model was created, the Kelly Kettle Trekker small.
But the company was still very old-fashioned, and it would take some time before production really took off.
However, with Padraic’s good reputation among anglers, Kelly Kettle’s good qualities, and the rise of the internet, it quickly became clear that the old Patrick’s Kelly Kettle would conquer all continents.
In 2005, Patrick Kelly’s great-grandchildren Seamus and Patrick II took over the helm of the Kelly Kettle company, bringing new experience and drive to the Kelly Kettle enterprise.
They introduced new initiatives and energy, drawing on their previous positions in the commercial banking world and international marketing.
The two great-grandchildren quickly developed the pot support and Kelly Kettle medium scout, both in aluminum. However, demand for aluminum products dropped sharply, while demand for stainless steel products increased.
Seamus and Patrick had to do something, but with neither money nor experience, it was a big challenge.

Through hard work, business reorganization, and many attempts, they succeeded in producing the first Kelly Kettle Base Camp kettle in stainless steel.
It became hugely popular and helped save the business.
Soon after the success of the stainless steel Base Camp kettle, the Kelly Kettle Cook set and Pot support in stainless steel followed, and in 2014 the Kelly Kettle product line grew even larger with the Hobo stove, camping cups, camping plates, and the two kits, Kelly Kettle Ultimate Base Camp kit and Kelly Kettle Ultimate Scout kit.

They also updated the stopper to include a whistle, so you can easily hear when the water boils, which helps increase safety when using Kelly Kettle products.
