This allows you to easily sharpen your knife or axe to a razor edge, while being convenient and easy to carry in your gear.

The sharpening stone folds open and closed, just like a classic folding knife, and the sharpening stones themselves are well protected when not in use.

What type of sharpening stones are on the Fällkniven Flipstone FS3?

Diamond sharpening stone (yellow side)
The diamond sharpening stone is the hardest/coarsest side. This is where you start sharpening your knife or axe. It is made of Titanium aluminum nitride (TiAIN). This means it has high resistance to heat and oxidation.
It may feel a bit coarse at first, but after some use it becomes even nicer to work with. It does not harm your knife in any way; on the contrary, this is a knife sharpening stone where you can sharpen all knives to a super sharp edge.

Ceramic sharpening stone (white side)
The ceramic sharpening stone is the 'fine side'. It is made of synthetic sapphires. It has a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale. This is the side you finish your sharpening work on to remove the last small burrs.

Should I use water or oil when sharpening my knife or axe with the Flipstone?

No, you do not need to. Use it as is.

However, you can advantageously clean it occasionally with some lukewarm water and mild soap.

How do I open and close my sharpening stone?

There is a small lock on the handle that can be easily pushed forward, allowing you to open and close the sharpening stone. You do this by pressing the button on the side.
When you want to close it again, you also press the button on the side of the handle, allowing you to fold the sharpening stone into the handle.

Afterwards, you can lock your sharpening stone by sliding the lock back so it won’t open in your bag, even if the button is pressed.
Of course, it is not sharp in any way, but it is still quite practical.
