How much can a carabiner hold?
Understanding the numbers on your carabiner
Carabiners can have many different purposes, and therefore there is a wide range in how much each carabiner can hold.
On all carabiners designed to handle a load, some numbers are stamped on the carabiner.
The first is usually:
CE
CE followed by a number indicates that the product meets European standards regarding safety, health, environment, etc.
EN
After CE and the four digits comes EN and some numbers; this describes the type of test performed to certify the carabiner with the CE mark, and is thus related to the CE certification.
kN ←→ 24 ↑↓ 7 ⏍ 7
kN means kilonewton, and simply put, 1 kilonewton = 100 kg
This means the carabiner can withstand a load of the stated number of kN/kilonewtons in the direction indicated by the arrows. So for this carabiner, the breaking strength is 24 kN = approx. 2400 kg in the lengthwise direction, making it suitable for hammocks and other personal loads.
The last symbol shows an open carabiner and the load it can handle when open.
