Description

Kuksa wooden cup Nordic tradition you can drink from!

It is considered a tradition in the Nordic countries to create your own kuksa wooden cup when you feel the time is right. However, it is rare to find the materials that meet the requirements to make a kuksa wooden cup.

A kuksa wooden cup can therefore be a challenge to make, so if you don’t feel ready yet, you can acquire this kuksa wooden cup made of birch wood, with a beautiful inlay of reindeer horn, and an accompanying leather strap.
It is a solid natural companion you can use again and again, and that you will enjoy bringing out.

There is naturally a rich tradition behind the kuksa and wooden cups in the Nordic region, and for good reason. The aesthetic expression and the feel of the wood, along with the inlay of reindeer horn, contribute immensely to your outdoor experience.
It’s not just about the equipment you have, but especially about the feeling your equipment gives you.
So when the morning coffee is poured into the cup on a frost-clear morning, it matters how it feels and is served.

Below you can read about what an original Nordic kuksa wooden cup requires.

A long process.

Kuksas or wooden cups, as they are also called, are traditionally made from birch burls, which are large, black, ball-like growths on birch trees.
Burls are caused by damage to the tree, where the birch has tried to repair its injury by growing over the damaged area. The result is a burl where the wood grain grows in all directions and forms a hard lump. These growths and patterns in all directions in the burl make the wood very hard and difficult to carve.

The hardness is part of the process that makes carving a kuksa slow.

It is generally difficult to find such a burl that is the right size, located at a reachable height, and generally on a tree in a forest where it is legal to cut random trees, meaning private forests with the owner’s permission.

The burl should preferably dry for two to three years to be fully ready.

But if the burl cracks or splits due to drying, you might be back to square one. If the burl is not allowed to dry, it will simply crack at some point after you have produced your kuksa wooden cup.

Whichever solution you choose, a kuksa wooden cup is a great addition to the adventure, and this model is especially lovely.
