Description
Hultafors Sharpening Stone
The Hultafors sharpening stone for axes comes in a sturdy and attractive leather case. A sharp axe is not only better to work with, it is also much safer—just like with knives. It’s always a good idea to give your axe a pass with this sharpening stone/whetstone before you head out on a trip, and maybe even while you’re out there.
Proper care and maintenance make a difference in the work you do, and it’s always more enjoyable to use when it’s sharp and effective.
The Hultafors sharpening stone has two grits—180 grit on one side for burr removal and coarse sharpening, and a finer 600 grit side for when you want to get it really sharp.
If you want your axe super sharp, you can hone the edge with a leather strop.
A little tip or two:
Apply a bit of water to the stone before sharpening your axe. This makes the work easier and extends the life of the sharpening stone.
After sharpening, wipe the axe head clean and dry, then apply a few drops of regular cooking oil to keep the worst surface rust away. (This, of course, does not apply to stainless steel blades.)
For the handle, we recommend a natural wood oil, as cooking oil can go rancid.
The Hultafors sharpening stone is simply a great piece of sharpening equipment, but if your axe has gotten a large chip in the edge, we recommend starting with this—
Diamond sharpening stone for knives and axes so you don’t risk damaging the lovely Hultafors sharpening stone with big chips.
