De korte ture i skoven er oftest de bedste

The short trips in the forest are often the best

A good friend, some food, and a campfire – that’s all it takes to make life a little better. It had been quite a while since I last heard from my old elementary school friend. The years had passed, one day at a time... just as time always does. But then one day, a message popped up on my phone, and soon we were having a long phone conversation. We agreed that we really needed to do something together, because it had been waaay too long! The plan was a trip to the forest, with some beers and good food.

We found a remote campsite and quickly set up a couple of tent tarps. Our camp was close to the water, near springs, and in a windy area. This is where we would stay and enjoy ourselves for the next twenty-four hours.

Improvised grill rack

My friend had brought a nice piece of meat. A loin from a piece of raw venison would be the centerpiece of our dinner. In our excitement over the spontaneous trip, we hadn’t coordinated who would bring which gear. So here we were without a grill rack or anything to make cooking the meat easier. The result was an improvised grill rack made from fresh branches. It works really well, as long as you remember to have fresh branches ready at regular intervals.

Hash and fried eggs

Our breakfast was a delicious mix of: coffee made with water from the spring, venison tenderloin fried together with onions and sausages. All served with fried eggs and butter-toasted rye bread with salt.

My friend in playful mood

Small projects are always good because they keep your mind busy and creativity flowing. Here, small sticks are whittled and placed in a can. This is then put in the fire, and the small pieces of wood char. The idea was to make small pieces of charcoal that easily catch sparks from the fire steel and can then be blown into flames.

Tip for the really playful: Instead of small shavings, use smaller sticks and put them in the can. When they char in the fire, you get drawing charcoal. Both in the forest and at home, charcoal is really fun to play and draw with.
