Test of Packraft with spraydeck PRX from Cuma Gear
There is gear that just changes the way you experience nature. For me, I experienced that when I sat in a Packraft with spraydeck PRX from Cuma Gear. I have tried many different kinds of equipment over time, but this felt like something truly special.
To give the packraft the ultimate test, I set off with Jesper Hede from Bushcraft Denmark on a trip to Sweden. The goal was simple: we wanted to find out if the packraft lived up to my hopes that it could handle long paddling trips on the lake, in waves, shallow water, by stones and cliffs, and if it was really as compact, sturdy, and easy to use as I hoped.
One early morning in June, we packed the car with the essentials: packrafts, bags, fishing gear, tarp, and sleeping equipment, and of course some beer. The trip headed to southern Sweden, where we had chosen an area with large connected lakes. The perfect place to see what a packraft can really do.
Upon arrival around lunchtime, we quickly unpacked the gear and prepared the packrafts. It took only a few minutes to inflate them. A good pump bag is included, but you can also use a small electric air pump for help. The whole packraft package including paddle, seat, and pump weighs only 5.6 kilos, so everything easily fits in the backpack along with sleeping gear, tarp, and food.
The packraft on the water – sturdy and stable
The first day we paddled about 10 km, through both deep water and shallow, flowing areas with stones. The packraft was really put to the test, but it handled it without problems. The packraft’s sturdy bottom made of 840D TPU-nylon withstands it all, and you feel safe, even when the wind picks up.
One thing I especially noticed was the stability. Where a canoe or a light kayak can feel lively, a packraft lies calmly in the water. The center of gravity is low because you sit right at the bottom, and that gives a secure feeling, even on open lakes where the water is deep and there can be some waves.
Campfire fun on a rocky island
Around 7 p.m. we found a small rocky island where we went ashore. The packrafts were emptied, tarps were set up, and we quickly made a fire and some dinner. The rest of the evening was spent relaxing, chatting, and having a couple of cold beers – that’s exactly the kind of trip you remember.
I slept soundly under my tarp, and when we woke up the next morning, there was coffee and breakfast before we packed up again and headed back.
Portages and headwinds
Along the way, we had to carry the packrafts over some small islands. This is where you really notice another advantage: it weighs only 3.75 kilos and can easily be carried alone, even with gear in the bag.
The last kilometer to the car the wind picked up. In fact, it was so stormy that we had to paddle ashore and walk the last stretch to the car. That meant 4.5 km with the packraft in the backpack. And that’s exactly the point: a packraft can be packed so compactly that you just carry it on your back and continue on foot.
A packraft that delivers on its promises
Back in Denmark, I could confirm that the PRX Packraft from Cuma Gear lived up to all my expectations – and then some. It’s sturdy, easy to paddle, stable even in windy weather, and easy to carry around under your arm if needed.
I especially like the spraydeck, which keeps most of the water out so you don’t get soaked along the way. At the same time, it’s flexible enough that you can roll it away and paddle without it if you want. The gear can either lie under the spraydeck or be strapped in front of the packraft.
I’ll put it simply: the packraft from Cuma Gear is solid gear that opens up completely new possibilities. You can pack a bag, hop on your bike or the train, and suddenly you have access to lakes, streams, and waterways that would otherwise be out of reach. And if you want to combine hiking and paddling, or just want the option to explore lakes and streams, a packraft is some of the coolest outdoor gear you can own.
My trip to Sweden showed me that the packraft is a sturdy, safe, and absolutely amazing piece of equipment that gives you experiences that would otherwise be hard to get.
I can only recommend going on your own packraft adventure – you won’t regret it!
