A good place to start with hammock gear is an underquilt. It’s all about lying as comfortably as possible while gently swinging above the forest floor.

This Hammock Under Quilt from ENO is designed for spring and summer, so it is not suitable for harsh subzero temperatures. The comfort temperature ranges between 4 and 15 degrees Celsius. That doesn’t mean you can only camp when the weather is exactly within those degrees, but that’s the range where the ENO underquilt performs best.

It can also be used in 20 and 25 degrees, but at those temperatures it’s probably a good idea to open your sleeping bag a bit at night to let some air in to your body.

You can sleep without an underquilt or pad at those temperatures, but cold winds still come during summer nights, and an unprotected hammock bottom combined with cold wind is a bad combination.

Why use an underquilt for your hammock?

You can get hammocks with built-in pockets to slide a pad into. You can also place the desired pad directly inside the bottom of the hammock and sleep quite decently that way.
