Cold Browning, the short version
Cold browning is simply an acid treatment of a metal that results in a more or less black finish depending on the metal and its purity.
The browned item gains a very light surface protection which, of course, means that corrosion / rust / tarnish won't take hold immediately.
But as mentioned, it is a very light surface treatment that gives a beautiful black finish.
Note that quick browning does not work on stainless steel.
