Heavy-Duty Firesteel from Cuma Gear

A large firesteel like this has a clear advantage – the size itself makes it even easier to produce a shower of sparks, helping your fire catch more easily.

CUMA GEAR has specialized from the start in producing the best and wildest firesteels, and this new model is no exception.

This firesteel is 15 cm long and weighs 165 g.
There is enough material here for many, many hundreds of fire starts.

New striker – New model

The brand new feature of this model is the striker, the piece you scrape along the firesteel.
First of all, the striker fits over the firesteel, meaning it doesn’t 'hang loose' when you carry it, but you can keep it close to the firesteel and wrap the cord around it, keeping everything together.

At the end of the striker are 'teeth', small notches that make it easier to scrape some material off your firesteel when you’re starting a fire (you can see how in the video below, though it shows a different firesteel).
After scraping some material onto the tinder you want to light, you then scrape with the side of the striker, not where the teeth are, but with the side.

Once the fire catches well, you can finally pop open a cold beer or soda, as there is also a bottle opener – why not, since there was room for it.

First time you use your firesteel

The first time you use your firesteel, you need to scrape off some of the black coating. It’s there to protect the firesteel and give it the black look.
You can scrape it off either with the striker or with a piece of sandpaper.
You definitely don’t need to remove it from the entire firesteel, just start with the area you’ll use first.

Fatwood & Firesteel

One of the great things to bring on a trip, besides a good firesteel of course, is fatwood. Simply put, it’s resin-saturated pine wood, which makes it extra easy to start a fire, and you can easily find your own here in our Danish nature.
