A practical guide to foil blankets for outdoor enthusiasts, bushcrafters, and anyone spending time in nature

What is a foil blanket?

A foil blanket is a thin, metallized foil blanket, typically made of plastic with a reflective aluminum coating. Most models have two sides – one silver and one gold – and it’s not just for looks.

The silver side reflects up to 90% of the body’s radiated heat back, while the gold side is often used outward to reduce heat loss and increase visibility. This makes the foil blanket extremely effective as a thermal blanket, even though it is incredibly thin.

It’s important to understand that a foil blanket does not generate heat. It works by limiting heat loss – primarily through reflection and by blocking wind and rain.

Light and compact – perfect for the backpack

One of the clever things about a foil blanket is that it takes up almost no space. Folded, it typically takes up less room than a small stack of playing cards and often weighs around 50 grams.

That means there’s really no excuse not to have a foil blanket with you:

  • In the backpack

  • In the pocket of your jacket

  • In the car’s emergency kit

  • In the first aid kit or bag

  • In your bushcraft setup

For bushcrafters and outdoor enthusiasts, weight and volume are often crucial – and here there’s really no reason not to pack a couple of foil blankets when you go on an adventure.

What can you use a foil blanket for?

A thermal blanket can be used in many situations. Here are some of the most common – and most useful – applications:

👉 Keep warm in cold and wet conditions

The most well-known function: to reduce heat loss and protect against hypothermia. If you are wet, exposed to wind, or exhausted, a rescue blanket can be crucial for retaining the body heat you have.

👉 Protect against wind, rain, and snow

The foil blanket works as an effective wind and moisture barrier. It can be used as a poncho, wrapped around the body, or stretched out as a temporary shelter.

👉 Reflect body heat

The reflective surface sends the heat back towards the body and acts almost like insulation, so the heat doesn’t escape again.

👉 Insulating underlay

If you place the space blanket between you and the ground, it reduces heat loss. It’s not a substitute for a sleeping pad, but it can be a lifesaver in an emergency. If you place the survival blanket on top of your pad, it acts as an insulating barrier and better protects you from cold from below.

👉 Temporary shelter and windbreak

A space blanket can be stretched out like a small tarp-like shelter, providing both wind protection and rain cover. It’s perfect as an emergency shelter or a supplement to your existing shelter.

👉 Signaling in emergencies

The shiny surface can be seen from a long distance and is actively used to reflect sunlight or attract attention from rescuers.

👉 Protection from sun and overheating

Turn the reflective side outward and use the blanket as a sunshade. It can help reduce heat exposure and protect against overheating in open terrain.

To make it a bit clearer, we’ve made a short video showing many of the uses of a space blanket. Watch the video here 🎥

An important fact about the space blanket: It does not dry you

It’s important to emphasize: a space blanket cannot dry you. If you are soaked, it’s still important to remove wet clothing if possible.

On the other hand, an emergency blanket retains heat and protects the body, even when you’re wet – which is why space blankets, also called anti-shock blankets, are routinely used in first aid to reduce the risk of hypothermia.

Essential part of your first aid equipment

In a first aid situation – accident, fall, shock, or exhaustion – the body quickly loses heat. Here, the thermal blanket is one of the most effective and fastest aids you can use. That’s why space blankets are standard equipment in ambulances and rescue helicopters, military gear, and professional first aid kits.

For those who spend time outdoors in nature, help can be far away. That’s why it makes extra sense to have a space blanket in your first aid kit. In nature, you are often your own first responder, and a simple emergency blanket can buy you time, stabilize the situation, and make the wait for help significantly safer.

In the vast majority of first aid kits, there is a survival blanket – however, we recommend carrying more than one survival blanket, just to be safe.

How does the survival blanket work as a first aid blanket?

A survival blanket is primarily made to preserve body heat and protect the body from cold, wind, and moisture. Here’s how the survival blanket works:

  1. Reflects body heat

    • The metallized surface reflects up to 90% of the heat your body emits.

    • This means that heat is “sent back” toward the body instead of escaping into the surroundings.

  2. Blocks wind and rain

    • The foil is windproof and water-repellent.

    • Even if you are wet, the foil blanket can significantly reduce heat loss and thus lower the risk of hypothermia.

  3. Creates an insulating layer

    • When you wrap the blanket around you or place it under you, it acts as an extra insulating layer between you and the ground, limiting heat loss.

  4. Signaling

    • The reflective surface can also be used to attract attention from rescuers, which is useful in emergencies.

Survival blanket and bushcraft – why does it make sense?

Some bushcrafters prefer natural materials and minimalist gear – and that’s completely fair – that’s basically what bushcraft is about. But as we see it, a survival blanket is not a replacement for your good skills – it’s a tool that can make a big difference in an unfortunate situation.

The survival blanket can therefore be a sensible precaution to carry in your bag, just as a safety measure, since it can ultimately save lives if everything else fails. The survival blanket is ultra-compact and lightweight, so you can easily carry it in your first aid kit or in a pocket or backpack.

The most underrated piece of outdoor gear

For us, a survival blanket is one of the most underrated outdoor and safety equipment items.

Some call it a survival blanket, thermal blanket, rescue blanket, foil blanket, emergency blanket, or space blanket – yes, it has many names – but the function is the same for all of them: to help you retain heat, protect your body, and buy you time.

So if you don’t already have a survival blanket in your gear, we think you should consider whether there should be room for one in your backpack – because it can really make a huge difference in an unfortunate situation.
