Description
Silva Ranger S – compact and robust mirror compass for precise navigation in the terrain
When you venture out into nature – hiking, hunting, or on a longer expedition – a good and sturdy compass is a fantastic piece of gear that can help you navigate unfamiliar terrain. The Ranger S mirror compass from Silva makes it easy to take accurate bearings over distances, and its robust and waterproof design makes the compass ideal for all kinds of outdoor adventures.
The Ranger S has everything you need for serious map and compass navigation: DryFlex™ grip that ensures a firm hold on the compass even with wet hands, as well as a declination scale inside the capsule so you can compensate for the Earth's magnetic field without extra tools. On the baseplate itself, you’ll find scales in both mm, 1:25,000 and 1:50,000, and of course, there is an integrated magnifying glass so you can clearly see all map details.
With the mirror function and 45-degree angle marking, you can take precise courses over long distances without lifting your eyes from the target. It’s all easy and intuitive, especially if you use Silva’s own 1-2-3 navigation system – a method that makes it quick to take a bearing, follow it in the terrain, and maintain direction.
As a new feature, Silva has added integrated scales in 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 on the neck lanyard, making it easy to measure distances directly on the map. It’s a detail you quickly learn to appreciate when planning your route in the field.
Are you a beginner or unsure how to navigate with a compass and map? Don’t worry, read our guide on how to use the compass here – it’s not as hard as you think!
Features that make a difference when navigating in the wilderness
Here are some of the details and features we think make the Ranger S compass stand out:
- Mirror sight function: Mirror with sighting hole allows you to read the course while looking at the target – useful in open areas.
- 45° guide line: A built-in 45-degree line in the mirror function provides stable and precise bearings, especially when the terrain forces you to navigate at angles.
- Scale lanyard / distance measurer: The included cord (lanyard) works as a flexible ruler with scales in 1:25 and 1:50, making it easy to measure distance directly on the map.
- Internal declination scale: Adjust for local deviation directly inside the capsule – no need to turn anything on the outside.
- Rotatable compass ring / housing: Compatible with Silva’s 1‑2‑3 navigation method, so you can work efficiently with map and course (see more about 1-2-3 navigation in the video below)
- Rubber grip (DryFlex grip): Gives you better control when holding the compass, and it stays firmly on the map.
- Luminous markings: The compass has self-luminous markings, allowing use at dusk and in the dark.
- Map measurement scales: Built-in scale in mm, plus scales for 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 for use with maps.
- Safety lanyard: Detachable cord with release mechanism so you can secure the compass and easily put it on and take it off.
- Robust construction and water protection: Made to withstand harsh conditions, with a waterproof capsule and durable materials.
These features make the Ranger S a versatile and advanced mirror compass that works both in open landscapes and in more challenging terrain.
